Mission Statement
Student Global Ambassador Program (SGAP Leaders) is a leadership program that empowers our underserved youth (ages 13-18) to take action on real-world problems by using STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to solve sustainability and social justice challenges.
Description
SGAP Leaders was founded out of an understanding that traditional schooling sometimes fails to teach valuable and necessary skills that pertain to life outside of the classroom setting, and is unable to see the multifaceted nature of issues that underserved youth face on a daily basis. SGAP Leaders goes above and beyond in our commitment to the students we work with. We recognize our students as passionate leaders yet we also acknowledge that our students may face hardships that hinder their ability to excel and we try to support them in whatever way we can.
From our inception we have focused on being a vehicle to develop leadership skills so that young people can find innovative and creative ways to address wicked social and environmental justice issues. We believe in a hands-on approach that encourages students to take initiative and develop crucial soft skills such as human-centered problem solving, communication, collaboration and presentation skills. It is crucial to provide a diverse population of students with the skills necessary to address critical issues in order to promote equity in the future. 45% of the students we serve are Black and 35% are Latinx or Hispanic. Of the total students that we serve, 60% are girls, and 72% reside in underserved communities or attend Title 1 schools.
Our organizational values are integrity, mutual respect and community-service.
