Become empowered to advocate for abused and neglected children here in the Shenandoah Valley. As a Court Appointed Special Advocate, you will be an independent voice and advocate for the best interests of a child during their time in the child welfare system. CASAs get to know their child, review educational and medical records, and talk to everyone involved in a child’s life - social workers, parents, teachers, and family members. They prepare (with the support of their Advocate Manager) and submit reports to the Courts in which they advocate for the best interest of their child. A child with a trained, dedicated CASA is more likely to find a safe and permanent home, to succeed in school, and most, importantly, they are half as likely to re-enter the foster care system. We have currently have volunteer opportunities open in three service areas- Lexington/Rockbridge/Buena Vista, Staunton/Augusta/Waynesboro, and Harrisonburg/Rockingham. CASA's have to be 21 years or older.

Blue Ridge CASA is expanding to Shenandoah and Page County. We are looking for people who are interested in becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate for a child in foster care. Over the last year, our advocates have worked an average of 6 hours a month. Responsibilities include: meeting with the child once a month, speaking with the biological family and foster family, coordinating with professionals, and attending court. The volunteer is supported at all times by their Advocate Manager. Training is provided and will start on September 9th, 2023. Children who have a CASA advocate report higher levels of hope, are less likely to re-enter the system, do better in school, and are connected to more services and support. With only 6 hours a month, you have the power to change a child's whole trajectory in life. * must be at least 21 years old and able to pass a background check
