Mission Statement
Kinship of Tomahawk is a youth mentoring program serving the Tomahawk School District. In the community based program, Kinship matches children ages 5-17, who for a variety of reasons need a positive adult role model in their life, with mentors who have like interests. Mentors can be individuals, couples or families. In addition, Kinship offers an after school "KinsKlub" Program that is open all kinskids (those with mentors and those still on the waiting list). KinsKlub offers educational program such as 4H and FoodWise. They perform community service projects such as cooking a meal for the homeless shelter, performing highway cleanup, and serving at the soup kitchen. During KinsKlub we also teach life skills, conflict resolution and about healthy relationships. In our in school based "Friends" Mentoring Program, students in 5th and 6th grade who are referred by their teachers, are matched with high school youth who visit with their little friends an hour each week during the school year to help tutor, eat lunch together, and just be a special friend.
Description
Mentors are individuals, couples, or families who are willing to spend a minimum of an hour a week or two hours every other week with a child who has similar interests. The expectation is that mentors will provide healthy role modeling and companionship. The initial commitment is for one year, but can be renewed annually for as long as both parties wish to continue the relationship.
