Mission Statement

Partnership Scholars Program (PSP) operates a program which provides a host of educational and cultural experiences to bridge academic, financial and social opportunity gaps for low-income and first-generation students. Specifically, our program supports academically motivated but economically disadvantaged students in grades 7-12 to promote college access and a lifetime of success. Each student is matched with a supportive mentor who has graduated from a four-year college or university. This mentor remains paired with the student for the entire 7th-12th grade trajectory and provides an invaluable resource to the student and his or her family. Mentors participate in a variety of meaningful activities with students ranging from visits to museums and attending live theater performances to to taking them on a college visit trip and reading their college essays.

Description

Volunteer mentors help economically disadvantaged, academically motivated middle and high school students gain the cultural literacy and academic preparation that will help them succeed in college. Our mentors are matched with 2 - 3 students with whom they build a caring relationship and try new things together on a monthly basis. PSP draws students from in the Southern California communities of El Monte, Lennox/Inglewood and Hawthorne and the northern California communities of Ukiah, Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Mentors provide guidance, exposure to new cultural activities like plays and sporting events, and social/emotional support to students from grade 7 - 12.

As one recent mentor wrote to us "Mentoring M. has been a life changing experience. It has been amazing to see a young, sheltered 7th grade girl grow into an outgoing, motivated, and mature young lady. She will be a life-long friend who I will "follow" as she tackles college, a career, and the rest of her life.
