Mission Statement

The mission of The Mentoring Project of the Upper Valley is to encourage self-confidence and academic growth among adolescents by creating mutually beneficial, one-to-one mentoring relationships between them and responsible adult volunteers based on trust and respect.
Mentors and mentees are matched based on mutual interest and geographic location. Once matched with a commitment to spend at least five hours per month together, they engage in wholesome activities together, either initiated by the mentor or the mentee, but based on their mutual interests. The program provides some passes to area venues, such as nature centers, movie theaters, restaurants, etc.
Mentors, with support from the Program Coordinator, strive to build self-esteem and motivation in the mentee and can help set goals and work toward accomplishing them.

Description

Mentor makes at least a one year commitment to meet with his/her mentee for at least five hours per month and to make some form of contact at least once a week. Mentor always obtains parental permission for any activities done with mentee. Mentor enters a monthly report of those activities on the on-line mentoring data-base. Mentor participates in at least two training sessions per year, and is encouraged to participate in quarterly group activities with his/her mentee. Mentor is a good listener and keeps as confidential any information shared by mentee, unless said info indicates potential harm or danger to the mentee or others. Mentor takes the lead in initiating activities or events to participate in with the mentee. Mentor is supportive and and encourages successes of the mentee.
