Mission Statement
We seek to provide services to vulnerable, marginalized and displaced/deported families, children, pregnant women and LGBTQ refugees and asylum seekers fleeing structural and non-structural violence. We aim to empower affected individuals and provide ethical, culturally competent, holistic and trauma informed care and resources to our patients. We are a dynamic network of volunteers, interprofessional clinicians, undergraduate/graduate students, and advocates from around the world to promote the well-being of under-resourced populations. We also promote discussion of the public health implications of such a large population of displaced individuals through research, advocacy, and educational initiatives.
Description
The Refugee Health Alliance has been providing the majority of medical care and basic needs for asylum-seekers and other vulnerable populations at the US-Mexico border in Tijuana since 2018 (e.g., 700 migrants a month). Our work has been recognized by accolades and awards from organizations like Al Otro Lado. We have 2 weekday clinics in Tijuana, provide remote services, and visit migrant shelters on the weekends. We provide a variety of ongoing, trauma-informed services including medical, midwivery, mental health, dentistry, acupuncture, naturopathic medical, and gender affirmation and LGBTQ services. When we can meet a need ourselves, we provide acute care and medical legal assistance and referrals. We also work to address the social determinants of health by distributing food and donations, and building Tijuana’s first ever clean public drinking fountain.
