Therapeutic Horseback Riding Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of our program. Our 100+ volunteers assist with lessons, fundraising, social media, events, office support, property managment and so much more! Whatever your interests or talents, we have an important job for you! There really is something for everyone here at NTRC. We are located just outside of Kearney, MO. Our classes are held at NTRC on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. We hold lessons year round in 5 sessions at 8 weeks each. All of our new volunteers will be invited to an orientation to get to know our program and see if this will be a good fit for you and for us. Reach out so we can share the next date we have one every month! Weekly Volunteer Tasks Side Walkers - Assist riders in the saddle by supporting them physically or assisting them cognitively. No horse riding or handling experience is needed, but you must be comfortable around horses. All new volunteers are generally started as side walkers, but may take on other tasks once they’ve become more familiar with our program. Horse Leaders - Lead a horse for a rider during classes. You must have some experience handling horses on the ground to be a horse leader. Additional training is required and provided by NTRC staff. Barn Helpers - Grooming, tacking, and potentially exercising horses before classes begin. You must have horse handling experience to serve as barn help. Additional training is required and provided by NTRC Staff. On-call Class Volunteers - We OFTEN need substitute side walkers and horse leaders for our regular class volunteers. If for any reason they cannot make it to their scheduled time slot, we need volunteers who we can call as fill-ins. This is a great option for those who want to come be involved but cannot make a regular weekly commitment. Other Volunteer Opportunities If you cannot commit to a weekly time slot, not to worry! There are other ways you can help at NTRC! Fundraising: We NEED you!! We are always in need of volunteers to help with the planning of NTRC's fundraising events such as Evening of Hope, Murder Mystery Dinner, Horse Show/Play Day and more. Special Events: Outside of planning, we also need volunteers for occasional NTRC events such as festivals, booths in the community, etc. We also rely on volunteers for office assistance, photography, and social media surrounding these special events. Volunteer Outreach: We need volunteers who can assist with outreach such as putting flyers around key areas, and help at informational booths.

Mission Statement

The mission of Northland Therapeutic Riding Center (NTRC) is to improve the quality of life of persons with special needs through equine assisted therapies (EAS). With the help of our volunteers we strive to create hope and independence in the participants futures. EAS use horses to positively impact the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being of people of all ages.

Description

Since it's founding in 2000, Northland Therapeutic Riding Center's professional staff, dedicated volunteers, and amazing horses have helped hundreds of children and adults improve their quality of life through equine assisted therapies. NTRC is a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) Premier Accredited Facility located on 32 acres with an indoor and outdoor arena and 4 pastures and 2 dry lots. Just 23 miles north of Kansas City, MO. The serenity and peacefulness of our location is conductive to a nurturing and learning environment.
We have 2 lesson formats mounted horse back therapy with a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and ground based Equine Specialist in Mental Health.
Therapeutic riding can benefit individuals with varying challenges, including but not limited to: Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Multiple Sclerosis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Speech, Vision, and Hearing Challenges, Spina Bifida, Deaf, Blind, Stroke, Cognitive, Social, or Behavioral Challenges.

Therapeutic riding can provide: improved balance, posture, and coordination, increased muscle tone and strength, increased range of motion and flexibility, increased problem-solving skills and concentration, and increased confidence, patience, and self-esteem. Plus it's fun for all involved!
