Purchase and create hygiene kits for refugees (Group volunteer opportunity!)

Participate in a Day of Service with us! For this 1-2 hour event, our staff come to your workplace or organization to give a short talk about refugees and lead your group in creating hygiene kits. These hygiene kits are then distributed to our refugee clients. This opportunity is perfect for groups of any size. It is a great way for a group to make a big impact in just an hour or two: One event produces enough hygiene kits to serve 25-50 families! Please note: Due to limited resources, we do ask your organization to purchase/collect all hygiene supplies needed for the event. This can easily be done by assigning each group member a different hygiene item to purchase.

Distribute furniture to refugee families

Our refugee families are rolling in and we need your help! Storage volunteers assist clients with selecting items to furnish their new homes from our storage units in Walnut Creek. Additionally, as a storage volunteer, you can help us accept drop-off donations to the storage unit from our donors. This is a very easy way to volunteer with us! There is a short orientation session at the storage unit to help familiarize you with our process. Then you’ll be added to a text thread where updates are sent when we have a new family arrival or a donor drop off. The time commitment is very flexible, based upon your availability. It’s a plus if you can help with moving furniture, but that is certainly not required.

Welcome new refugees as a Community Welcome Team!

If you are interested in volunteering directly with a refugee family for a few months, this is the opportunity for you! You will form a group of 4-8 members and then get matched with a refugee family to assist them in the resettlement process for 3-4 months. Examples of tasks your group will help with include: finding clients a job, signing kids up for school, navigating the public transportation system, showing them around town, etc. There is no financial commitment. An orientation is provided and we have a designated staff member who is available for guidance. This is a wonderful way to make an impact and many Community Welcome Teams end up staying in touch with their assigned family for years.

Deliver and drive to help newcomer refugees thrive!

Deliver vital supplies and get to know your new refugee neighbors. Sign up as a driver to participate in one-time volunteer opportunities that fit your schedule. Examples of driving tasks include delivering hygiene supplies to an Afghan family, bringing a LGBTQ refugee client to an appointment at our office, or driving a Ukranian family to their first doctor's appointment in the US. Moving to an entirely new country where nothing feels familiar is daunting - this is an easy way to make a refugee's first 90 days here just a bit easier. We are looking for drivers all across Alameda and Contra Costa County.

Become a Youth Ambassador to help refugees

Are you a pre-teen/teen looking to make an impact on refugees in your local community? Participate in our Youth Ambassador Program to learn more about refugees and design a project that will provide necessary supplies to our refugee clients, like hygiene items, school supplies, diapers, and toys. This is a good opportunity for younger volunteers 12+ to fulfill any service hours you may have for your high school graduation requirements, or to participate in a mitzvah project for your upcoming b’nai mitzvah. It is also a chance to gain leadership experience by organizing a collection drive for what our families and clients need the most. This can be done all across Alameda or Contra Costa County and we can accomodate any kind of timeline or schedule for the project.

Jewish Family & Community Services East Bay (JFCS East Bay) is a community-based, direct social and human services organization that serves and supports Alameda and Contra Costa County residents of all ages, races, and religions. Guided by Jewish values and in collaboration with the diverse communities we serve, JFCS East Bay contributes to the resilience of communities, families, and individuals through advocacy and comprehensive support services at every stage of life.

Description

JFCS East Bay is one of two refugee resettlement agencies in the East Bay. We have deep expertise in resettling LGBTQ+ refugees with Refugee Services.

We pair our resettlement work with Immigration Legal Services to offer comprehensive support for self-sufficiency and family reunification.

In addition, our Children, Youth & Families team attends to the mental health needs of young children and their families.

Our Older Adults and Aging Services team ensures that older adults-and their caregivers-are supported to live with decency and respect.

While our mission has broadened to serve the whole community, based on our value of being responsible for one another, we are committed to a set of services specifically for the Jewish community.
