As a foster volunteer, you’ll provide a loving home, exercise and wellness each evening and on weekends to a dog in professional training as they work toward becoming a service dog. You’ll drop-off and pick-up the dog for professional training each weekday, and witness the progress they’re making. You’ll play a key role in their journey without the full-time commitment of looking after a dog. All food, medical care, and resources are provided, and most fosters commit for 3-6 months. Dogs are either Labradors, Golden Retrievers, or a mix of both, and all are over 1.5 years old. Flexible options for drop-off/pick-up: Our training location in SODO, Seattle. Service dog shuttle at the West Seattle YMCA (Mon-Thurs, 8:20-8:45 AM/3:20-3:45 PM). Contact us about ridesharing to a central location. FAQs: Can I foster if I have pets at home? Yes, as long as your pets are fully vaccinated, friendly, and get along with other animals. Can I foster with small children in my home? Yes, the dogs are well-socialized with children of all ages. Do I need experience in dog training? No, professional trainers handle all training while the dog is at the Puget Sound Field Office. If you’re interested but don’t meet every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you! Feel free to reach out, and we’re happy to discuss possible options, including pickup from work locations around King County.

Volunteer to raise a puppy and be a part of something truly life changing! Canine Companions Puppy Raising Program provides a unique opportunity for volunteers from all over the country to assist with our very important mission of providing service dogs to people with disabilities. As a puppy raiser, you'll play a vital role in preparing our future service dogs. No dog experience is necessary- option for a mentor for first-time raisers. Most commit to raising a puppy for its full journey, but options for co-raising or shorter-term assistance are also available. Opportunity to join an extraordinary community of other puppy raisers, volunteers & graduates. Excellent service project opportunity for homeschool, FFA, 4-h & other community organizations Here's what's required for the 14-18 month journey: Provide a safe & loving environment for a puppy (the only dog under 12 months old in your home). Teach the puppy manners and basic skills- we'll show you how to do this! You’ll join a supportive network of experienced volunteers. Work closely with Canine Companions to monitor the puppy’s progress. Be responsible for food & feeding a recommended diet, veterinary expenses and attend an average of two puppy classes/month (either ran by Canine Companions or pre-approved classes) Transport the dog to the regional training center at the projected turn-in time. Provide the puppy with age-appropriate socialization opportunities, such as public outings and veterinary appointments. Keep the puppy on a leash at all times, unless supervised in a securely fenced area. Use a kennel or crate for sleeping indoors. Supervise the puppy throughout the day (some volunteers are able to obtain permission to bring their puppy to work).
