Do you love clothing? Put that knowledge to a great cause by joining our team at the WINGS Schaumburg store! It is a fun way to become part of a great organization that helps needy families in our community. Volunteers partner with the running of the store by sorting donations as they come in. We are looking for a skilled volunteer that know clothing brands name . The store provides the largest and most consistent form for funding for our program, which helps the adults and children in situations of domestic violence. This store also allows our clients in our program to go shopping for clothing and household items that they need at no cost to them! Anyone age 14 or older is welcome to get involved.

The cashier is welcoming and greeting customers, answering basic questions about the stores and the program, and ensuring that our visitors have a pleasant shopping and sales transaction experience with us. Training for the cash register will be provided. This might be a good fit for you if: You are comfortable working with a cash register and handling sales transactions (or are willing to learn), you are comfortable with fundamental math concepts including calculating percents, you enjoy being a part of a great team made up of committed and diverse volunteers and staff members, you have a friendly smile and enjoy helping customers, you are looking for a volunteer opportunity that supports families in rebuilding their lives after the devastating effects of domestic violence and homelessness. Retail experience or cash register experience is a plus! Current openings for the cash register are Tuesdays and Thursday and Fridays from 10am to 2pm. The store provides the largest and most consistent form for funding for our program, which helps women and children in situations of domestic violence. This store also allows the women in our program to go shopping for clothing and household items that they need at no cost to them!

The WINGS domestic violence Safe House has capacity for up to 45 women and children a night. In addition to shelter, we provide counseling, case management, referrals, career services, and meals. Hostess will assist in this effort by warming up, setting out and putting away a previously prepared lunch for anyone in the house. Hostess volunteers are encouraged to eat with the residents and to promote constructive and friendly conversations with and between the residents who are there. Volunteers also help the clients with their daily tasks, including checking and signing off on the chore chart, filling requests for needed items such as diapers or laundry detergent from our supply closet, etc. Volunteers also promote constructive conversation and a positive environment by lending a listening ear to someone who wants to talk, engaging more hesitant residents in conversation to help them feel welcome and comfortable, even suggesting or facilitating simple activities (such as a card game or new toy) to women or mothers trying to entertain children.

Description: Each day we receive new and gently used items through the generosity of our local merchants and community members. We sell these items to the public with all proceeds going to support our shelters, counseling, and other services. These stores are a vital part of our organization because they provide the largest and most consistent source of funds for our program. All merchandise is also available to our residents, at no cost, as they rebuild their lives after the devastating effects of domestic violence and homelessness. To minimize the risk of injury, close-toed shoes are required. The volunteer sorter graciously accepts boxes and bags full of donated items from members of our community. Then, often working together, the sorter(s) will inspect the items for damage and put them into the appropriate categories for further pricing and processing (i.e women’s clothing, kids toys, books, etc.) This might be a good fit for you if: You are a self-described "treasure hunter," or you enjoy the surprise of opening a box with no idea what will be inside You know about name brands of clothing or household items (or are willing to learn) You will enjoy using your attentive eye to find defects on items (including missing buttons, broken zippers, small stains, etc.) When needed, you are able to lift 25 lbs (example; a black trash bag full of clothing) You love clothes, books, accessories, shoes or shopping! You are able to work while standing You enjoy being a part of a great team made up of committed and diverse volunteers and staff members

Title : Kid’s Group Assistant Location: WINGS Domestic Violence Safe House, which is in an undisclosed location in the South Chicago Midway airport area Time: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from approximately 6:00pm to 8:00pm Commitment: Requires a 12-month commitment to volunteer weekly (with a "substitute" list available for occasional schedule changes). Occasionally there are opportunities for a commitment of every other week. Requirements: Completion of the 40 Hour Domestic Violence Training (WINGS will provide this training, which is usually offered two (2) times a year.) and background check. Any personal experience with domestic violence should be more than two (2) years prior to applying for this volunteer opportunity. A willingness to keep the location confidential. Bilingual abilities are especially valued, but are not necessary for all applicants. Description: - A staff member will plan the activities. Volunteers participate in the activities to provide the children with more individual attention. Because the age ranges of the kids vary widely, often a smaller group is formed to adapt to the activity to the age group. However, ratios sometimes vary due to the unpredictable nature of families in this situation. THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD FIT FOR YOU IF: - This is a great opportunity for people who enjoy very young children. Often there are enough babies and toddlers to designate a "nursery" where the volunteer assistant will comfort and cuddle the littlest ones, or read books and play with toddlers. - At the Safe House, there are weekly groups for the kids in the evenings. The evenings have different themes. For example; one night could be game night, one night could be focused around the theme of cooperation. You enjoy being with children of all ages. You are fun-loving and enjoy participating in games and crafts. You are flexible and able to respond to changing situations. You have strong personal boundaries and are able to demonstrate those to children. You are interested in being a role model and teacher to the children in the areas of social skills, conflict resolution and respecting boundaries. You feel good when you are helping others. You feel comfortable working with people in a diverse environment in regards to social-economic status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and religion. You are non-judgmental about why families are in a situation where they are in need of help.
