The Monterey State Historic Park Custom House Store raises funds for our School Programs to cover costs including supplies, transportation, and grants for underfunded schools, as well as the restoration of our historic structures. The Custom House Store is entirely volunteer-run and is our most important year-long fundraising effort! Volunteers operate the park store located inside the historic Custom House and provide general visitor services. Training is provided for all volunteers. Volunteers will be expected to: Perform opening and closing procedures of the park store. Operate the cash register and complete sales of store items. Give out park brochures and information to visitors. Interpret the history of the Custom House in an accurate and professional manner. Be familiar with park features and cultural significance. Qualifications/Skills Required: Count money and operate a cash register. Comfortable with public speaking. Friendly, courteous and possess good communication skills. Positive attitude and willingness to work as a team member with Park staff and visitors.

Monterey State Historic Park is seeking volunteers to act as greeters in the Custom House Museum. The Custom House is located next to Fisherman's Wharf in downtown Monterey. This historic buidling was built in 1827 and is State Historical Landmark #1. Greeters will work alonside State Parks staff to welcome visitors from around the world and provide introductory information about the museum and the Park.

Make the difference in a school child's education and turn their lessons into something they'll remember for the rest of their lives! School group program volunteers assist MSHP Staff with hands-on interpretive presentations to 4th grade school classes. These activities introduce children to the tactile reality of Monterey's history and contextualize their lessons. Activities include rope making, tortilla cooking, cartography, leather branding, and playing with historic games and toys. Volunteers agree: To attend training to acquire a background of MSHP’s natural and cultural history and to educate 4 th grade students about the park’s natural and cultural resources using interpretive communication. To lead small student groups in hands-on historical activities. To perform all duties in a professional manner striving to provide courteous services for all park guests. They should have: A willingness to learn and interpret historical and cultural information for 4 th grade students. Possess a positive and enthusiastic attitude and good communication skills. Comfortable with park visitors of all ages and with working both with Park staff and independently. The ability to make a serious commitment to attend training, continuing education workshops and meetings. Formal training conducted by park staff is required to become a School Program Docent. Continued training will be offered for docent enrichment and as required. Volunteers will wear a park volunteer vest which will display the State Park volunteer emblem and name tag at all times. Description
Our state park emphasizes and interprets Monterey's extraordinary history for all visitors to the area. Volunteers support our park by assisting with school programs, living history events, and interpretive activities. We have been recognized locally and statewide as a valuable member of the community for our educational programs that provides transportation scholarships to underfunded schools to bus students to our history field trips. Additionally, volunteers work in our non-profit gift shop that funds these efforts.
