Mission Statement

Minds Matter connects driven and determined high school students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world.

Description

We equip high school students with the tools to gain acceptance to and graduate from a four-year university with minimal to no tuition cost burden by providing them critical resources - such as mentoring, tutoring, SAT and ACT test preparation, summer academic programs, and financial aid application assistance - to ensure both college access and success. Through our efforts, we help our students develop into tomorrow's leaders. We introduce them to a world of opportunity outside their neighborhoods and comfort zones. Minds Matter believes that no student dedicated to earning a college education should be limited by socioeconomic status.

Over 7 years ago I started volunteering with Minds Matter Cleveland (MM). My first 3 years I had the opportunity to mentor, work with and get to know two amazing young ladies as they applied and ultimately were accepted into their best fit college. And I am now, in my 4th year as a MM Co-Director of College Advising, and each Saturday I get the chance to work with a group of dedicated and compassionate volunteers and MM F/T program staff as we guide a group of talented, ambitious, and resilient high school seniors through the college admission process. MM is a great opportunity to focus on the future, have an impact on the future, and be excited for the future with a great group of people.

I joined Minds Matter as a mentor in 2020. I was new to Cleveland and looking for a volunteer opportunity that fit my career and personal interests in college access. I got exactly what I hoped for and so much more! Minds Matter has become a permanent fixture in my life. I've made friends with other mentors, improved my own professional skills, and most importantly - I've been able to have an impact on the lives of some really incredible students. The student I mentored for three years is now entering her second year at a really competitive college and I've invested even more time into MM as part of the leadership team. The full time program staff are awesome. The students are awesome. This whole program is truly so great.
