Mission Statement

To improve the health of people and communities through accessible, quality care.

Description

Over the past 50 years, Venice Family Clinic’s mission of providing quality primary health care to people in need hasn’t changed, but its scope has broadened dramatically. Today, the Clinic has about 400 staff members and more than 1,300 volunteers who serve 28,000 patients, without regard for their ability to pay or immigration status. Its programs have expanded beyond primary medical care to include dental, vision, behavioral health, exercise classes, health education, early childhood development - and street medicine for people experiencing homelessness, to ensure even the most vulnerable of its neighbors get the medical care they deserve.

Our Volunteer Services Department strives to recruit and connect the best volunteers possible with almost every department within the clinic. We work to provide support to the volunteers as well as the clinic teams whom they help. Every year, we work with over 1400 volunteers, including approximately 500 provider volunteers. Our department helps with recruiting, training, scheduling, and general upkeep of all volunteers.

Venice Family Clinic is certainly a place for both professional and good behavioral development. I have learned a lot from this clinic, great place to serve. The volunteer department here, helped me uplift my career, knowledge and trained me as a Medical Scribe, even though I volunteered as a health care navigator. It's one of the best clinic delivering medical services to homeless people. I'm really happy to be a part of this clinic!

If you enjoy patient interaction and have a passion for helping under-served populations, then you will definitely love volunteering as a clinic assistant at VFC. It is an opportunity to have hands-on patient experience in a clinical setting, as well as assisting in pharmacy, dentistry, and more! Most of all, the staff are very friendly and are willing to teach you.

If you're prehealth or thinking about going into a health field, this is a good place to volunteer. Being a clinic assistant, I've been able to work closely with the medical staff--medical assistants, nurses, residents, and staff providers alike--with working up patients and getting everything in order for their time with the doctor. If you can get one of the spots you'll really be able to get your hands dirty and learn how everything functions in a clinic setting. I can't vouch for the other areas as much as I haven't worked in them, but overall you'll see that everyone here cares about the people they're treating. The people in the volunteer department are also very helpful--let them know what your interests are and I'm sure you'll find something you like. One tip for those who will with patients: during most weeks, maybe half of the patients I've worked with speak primarily Spanish, so it's very helpful to know even the basics!
