Feed Horses at a Non-Profit Riding Center

Flexible Schedule | Michigan City, IN 46360

Join a crew, feed the herd of 15 equines (from draft horses to shetland ponies to a miniature donkey), get some exercise, and spend time outdoors! * Horse feeding shifts start at 7:00 a.m. CT and 3:30 p.m. CT every day (on-the-job training provided). Each shift takes 1.5-2 hours. You'll join a crew of 2-4 others. A commitment of one shift per week is requested. Feeders need to be at least 16 years old, wear closed-toe shoes, and dress for the weather. Chores include feeding & watering horses, mucking stalls, pushing wheelbarrow, throwing hay, haltering & leading horses, walking on uneven surfaces, & sweeping barn. If you don't have rubber boots, we have limited sizes to borrow when the pastures are muddy. No horse experience needed. * There are also opportunities for facility/grounds maintenance which do not require a weekly commitment & work around volunteer's schedule.

Volunteer During Therapeutic Horseback Riding Lessons

No horse experience needed! Volunteers must be 13+ years old. After training, you will be able to assist riders with disabilities during their horseback riding lessons. Volunteers must commit to ~ 2 hours per week during an 8-week session. You will work with the same rider & horse during the entire session. Most volunteers are side walkers, meaning that you walk next to the rider during their lesson to provide the level of support they need - whether that's holding their ankle for balance or just walking alongside and helping them stay focused. Volunteers who demonstrate the appropriate level of skill & experience lead the horse during lessons. Other volunteer opportunities which require additional training are for Therapeutic Carriage Driving & Interactive Vaulting. See our website at www.reinsoflife.org for more info.

Description

Reins of Life serves children and adults with disabilities in our therapeutic riding program, as well as:

Special education classes through our school programs.
Seniors and group homes through our Nuzzles and Snuggles program.
Utilizes visits from our mini-horse to help educate and reach the community.
Veterans' program

Reins of Life works closely with the schools and colleges. Some activities and hours can be counted toward internships, community hours, etc.
