Have you served in the Military or are currently serving? Then, you should be a part of our La Diferencia (the difference) Veteran to Veteran program. You will need to be available for 6 or more months in the San Antonio area for this type of volunteering. Many of our terminally ill veteran patients are comforted by those who have served. Military history connects you in no better way. If you want to walk alongside of someone in their journey who has served their country, please consider volunteering to visit a terminally ill Veteran. Call me at 210-516-5980. Thank your for your service. Janet S. Garza, LMSW, La Diferencia Hospice Volunteer Coordinator. If you are needing to meet some volunteer hour requirement we will provide you with the ability to learn and utilize best practices to serve your patients. We then, will also provide you with letters of recommendation, reference letters, etc., that will help you with future employment and/or education. The first thing you do is email me to set up and interview, janet.garza@ladiferenciahospice.com. We treat each other and our volunteers like family (Como Familiia), so you will enjoy your volunteer experience. Note: we follow CDC, CMS and CHAP guidelines for safety. As of August 11, 2023, volunteers are not required to be fully COVID vaccinated.

Become a part of our Volunteer Team! You will make the Difference! La Diferencia needs direct service volunteers to provide home visits, companionship and active listening to patients. A presence. We also need volunteers to provide caregiver support. While the volunteer is visiting with the patient, the patient's loved one will be able to get some much needed rest or get an errand done. If appropriate, you may be able to create a book about the patient's life, through an informal question/answer method. Patient's appreciate knowing someone is helping them to write a book about their life. Volunteers also provide light household cleaning, utilize games, puzzles, books, crafts and music as ways to engage with patients who are terminally ill. Note: we follow CDC, CMS and CHAP guidelines for safety. All volunteers do not have to be fully COVID vaccinated as of August 11th, 2023. If you are a student who is needing an internship or job opportunity we will provide you with the ability to learn and utilize best practices to serve your patients. We then, will also provide you with letters of recommendation, reference letters, etc., that will help you with future employment and/or education. Providing Goody bags for the Terminally ill/Palliative Care patients provides hope from our volunteer match community. You can purchase lunch bags at a grocery store. Decorate them as you wish and purchase individually wrapped items such as: soft fruit snacks, rice crispy treats, soft granola bars, soft/hard candies, craft items, deck of cards, nail polish and maybe a pair of socks if you wish. You can add a little note to say, "Wishing you a good day." You can make 30 or 300, whatever you would like to make. This is a great individual volunteer event or this can also be a great team builder for co-workers to get together. You can start this event whenever you wish! For the patient's love ones who are taking care of these patients (24/7), our volunteer match community can also provide goody bags of hope and you can let them know in a note with good thoughts for their day along with the same types of snacks and items. If you have any questions on what kind of things for purchase for these goody bags, please email: janet.garza@ladiferenciahospice.com. Once you have finished these bags you would either drop them off at our office. If you need verification of your volunteer hours our organization will provide that through letter or signature. Thank you so much for your consideration and making the day of a terminally ill patient and their love ones. You truly provide hope through your kindness to patients and their families.

No Sew Fleece Blankets for our La Diferencia Terminally ill patients is great to do individually, as a family or as a team builder at work. Since most patients feel the cold more then heat, blankets all through the year are welcomed. The preferable blanket size would be a throw size (1.5 yard by 1.5 yard) simply because these blankets work better with patients who use a wheelchair. Purchase some fleece at your local nearby craft store and you are on your way to creating a blanket that will be cherished. A homemade fleece blanket many times becomes a family heirloom or a touch stone when a caregiver's loved one has passed. Please contact La Diferencia Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, Janet Garza if you need further instruction:(210) 516-5980. Also, for easy step-by-step instructions see link: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Fleece-Tie-Blanket. If you are a student or person who is needing volunteer hours, we will provide you with verification of the hours you have taken to create these blankets to your school, club, church or any other organization. Lastly, if you would just like to donate regular blankets, our patients are always in need.

We are needing volunteers to help clean and/or organize patient's homes. These volunteers could be former CNA's or nurses or anyone who understands the importance of a clean and organized home at the end of life. We are looking for volunteers who want to pay it forward or volunteers who just want to help a vulnerable population of the terminally ill. If you can donate 1 or 2 hours a week to provide a patient with some household peace of mind that would be great. For many volunteers this would add to your resume. After 10 hours, we will provide you with a recommendation from our office for future employment. Volunteers will clean and provide companionship to patients while you are visiting. Many times patients and their loved ones do not have the strength nor energy to clean and organize their homes. Our volunteers would be able to visit with the patients and do a load of dishes too. For more information contact Janet S. Garza, Volunteer Coordinator, LMSW, 210-516-5980 or to set up an interview email janet.garza@ladiferenciahospice.com. Note: we follow CDC, CMS and CHAP guidelines for safety. All volunteers do not have to be fully COVID vaccinated as of 08/11/23.
