Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh's (HARP) Wildlife Rehabilitaion Center opened its doors in 1997 and has been growing ever since! We operate a fully licensed wildlife rehabilitation clinic, specializing in the care and treatment of injured, orphaned, and ill native Pennsylvania wildlife. The goal for all our patients is to release them back into the wild as healthy individuals. Our staff has over 35 years of combined rehabilitation experience with wildlife, holding over 20 different licenses through the Pennsylvania Game Commission, PA Fish and Boat Commission, USDA, and US Fish and Wildlife Services. We are invested in continuing education and staying up to date on the best practices possible at our facility. Our clinic admits over 4,200 patients spanning over 140 different species every year, helping over 40,000 animals since opening! Volunteers at our Wildlife Rehabilitation Center support our mission to help and release injured, sick, and orphaned wild animals. From animal husbandry to daily operations, you could play a vital role in our organization’s dedication to local wildlife. Our clinic admits over 4,000 animals every year and has treated over 40,000 animals since opening our doors. _________________ Description: Quality Care is a non-animal handling role. You would be helping us to do a lot of cleaning and organizing of the facility, such as: washing dishes, laundry, sorting and stocking donations, sweeping, taking out trash, etc. This position is once a week and shifts are flexible at 2-4 hours in length. Shifts are offered 7 days a week between 8am-4pm; must be 18+ years old and able to commit to a minimum of 6 months. Reqirements: Application Act 34 clearance (free to volunteers) Proof of tetanus vaccination (from within the past 10 years) Age restriction: volunteers 18 and older may volunteer independently. 16 and 17, must have an adult on site with them. Younger than 16 are not permitted to volunteer, but HARP offers plenty of other opportunities for you that you can find on our website. Time requirement: 4 hours per week for at least 6 months. Animal Care volunteers are expected to serve their shifts, rain or shine, whether they are assigned to an indoor or outdoor space; please note that there is a lot of bending, walking on uneven and wet surfaces, and lifting involved. Animal Care volunteers are expected to help with Quality Care tasks (see description below) if they have extra time in their shift. Shifts to pick from are 8am-12pm, 9am-1pm, or 12pm-4pm, 7 days a week; must be 18+ years old and able to commit to a minimum of 6 months. Your dedication transforms lives, and we invite you to be a beacon of change with us at the forefront of compassion. ----------- Opportunities: Rabbit Exercise | 10am - 12pm (East) | 8am - 10am (North) | Daily Rabbits love to romp, and that’s exactly what these volunteers help out with! Rabbit exercise volunteers will transport our rabbits from their kennels to a larger room with lots of floor space for running and supervise as they get some essential exercise out of their kennels. All volunteers are trained in small animal body language and HARP-specific procedures. Small Animal Enrichment | Variable shifts In addition to rabbits, we occasionally have other small animals in our care such as guinea pigs, mice, chinchillas, ferrets, and more! While these animals don’t need quite as much space as our rabbits do, they do still greatly benefit from some human socialization. Your time can include cuddling, playing, feeding treats, and even some floor time in a meet and greet room. Volunteers spend time socializing with our cats, engaging with them in essential play time, enrichment time, and sometimes even working training protocols! All volunteers are trained in recognizing cat body language, basic handling, and HARP-specific procedures. Cat Care | 9am - 11am (North) | 7am - 9am (East) | Daily Cat Care volunteers assist our Animal Care department with routine cleaning of kennels and monitoring our cats for any basic needs that may arise. Duties include replacing blankets and towels, cleaning out litter boxes, swapping old toys for new ones, and recording basic health information.
