We have a meaningful volunteer opportunity for you to connect with a remarkable person and assist him in expressing his thoughts and experiences. Location: 168th Street, Burien, WA 98148 About the Participant: Our participant is a distinguished artist, activist, and community leader who has lived a rich and impactful life. he had a strong upbringing. he became an influential figure in the African American community. He studied painting under renowned artist Jacob Lawrence at the University of Washington and was an outspoken civil rights activist. Notably, he played a key role in the movement to create the Northwest African American Museum by occupying the Colman School in Seattle to prevent its demolition, eventually leading to the establishment of the African American Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. he has expressed a desire for a volunteer who can help him write down his thoughts. He often says, "I have a lot on my mind," and is seeking someone to assist with this process, allowing him to share and preserve his experiences. About the Volunteer Role: As a volunteer, you will provide support in writing down his thoughts, reflections, and stories. This is an opportunity to connect with a person of deep history and insight, helping him articulate and document his life and perspectives. Key Responsibilities: * Assist with writing down the participant’s thoughts, stories, and reflections. * Provide gentle encouragement for him to express his ideas, especially when word-finding becomes challenging due to his communication difficulties. * Help him organize his thoughts for any potential projects or creative work he may wish to pursue. * Foster a supportive, patient, and understanding relationship with the participant, ensuring he feels heard and valued. Participant Details: * Uses a wheelchair for most mobility but can use a walker for short distances. * Independent in most activities of daily living (ADLs). * Generally pleasant and engaging, though occasionally frustrated by communication challenges related to a stroke (CVA). * Displays flat affect and some hesitancy in responses but is oriented to self and place. * Can meet his own needs but would benefit from help in articulating his thoughts and preserving his legacy. Volunteer Skills and Qualities: * Compassionate and patient demeanor. * Strong listening and writing skills. * Respectful of the participant’s experiences and personal history. * Comfortable assisting with communication challenges. * Interest in art, civil rights, or history is a plus but not required. Are you a compassionate individual who speaks Ukrainian? We have an exciting volunteer opportunity to connect with a warm and social elderly participant who would greatly appreciate your companionship and support. Location: Heritage House at The Market, Seattle, WA 98101 About the Participant: Our participant was born in Ukraine near one of the country's largest rivers. His father passed away in 1943, just two years after he was born. Raised by his mother, aunts, uncles, and cousins, he has fond memories of a close-knit family, where his cousins were like siblings to him. He had a strong, positive relationship with his mother, and he cherishes the values of family and responsibility. He graduated from technical college and spent his career traveling throughout Ukraine, building equipment for chemical factories. He raised two children on his own and cared for his mother. In 2001, he moved to the United States to visit his children, who were studying here, and has since made Seattle his home. Why He Needs a Volunteer: While he speaks English to some extent, he is much more comfortable communicating in Ukrainian, Russian and having a volunteer who speaks Ukrainian would make a huge difference in his day-to-day interactions. He is a very social person who loves to talk, and having someone to converse with in his native language will allow him to feel more connected and understood. Key Responsibilities: * Engage in friendly conversations with the participant in Ukrainian, offering him the chance to share his stories and memories. * Be a positive, friendly presence in his life, making sure he feels supported and valued. * Provide companionship and emotional support, particularly with his interests in family, health, and happiness. Participant Details: * Social and enjoys conversation, especially in Ukrainian. * Speaks English intermittently, but Ukrainian is his preferred language. * Strong values in family, responsibility, and health. * Currently resides at Heritage House At The Market in Seattle, WA. * Cherishes family relationships, particularly with his children and grandchildren. Volunteer Skills and Qualities: * Fluent in Ukrainian (spoken language preferred). * Warm, patient, and friendly demeanor. * Good communication skills and a love for conversation. * Respectful of the participant’s life story and experiences. * Compassionate with a desire to support an elderly individual in maintaining strong social connections. About the Participant: Age: Elderly male Background: Former journeyman electrical lineman later became a foreman. He enjoys reading the Bible and praying daily. Current Situation: Recently experienced depression and boredom; enjoys getting outdoors in the sunshine, and his mood improves when he does.
