Mission Statement

Creating a community of readers, one lunch hour at a time since 2011.

Description

Lead to Read KC is a Kansas City nonprofit dedicated to supporting the social, emotional and reading skills that are foundational for student success by advancing our literacy platform and mobilizing community volunteers. Why? Only 21% of third graders in Kansas City public and charter schools are reading on grade level. (Source: SchoolSmartKC) Reading is essential - not just for success in school, but for life. When children have trouble learning to read, it can kick off a devastating downward spiral. Poor reading skills make it hard to keep up in other subject areas. Struggling readers are more likely to report feeling lonely, angry, anxious and depressed. And, they're more likely to have behavior problems, end up in the juvenile justice system and drop out of school. Launched in 2011, Lead to Read KC has grown into Kansas City’s largest literacy volunteer corps, connecting more than 1,300 elementary students with adult Reading Mentors across the metropolitan area each week.

Very rewarding time with one or more children that are struggling with learning to read. Leader of my group is enthusiastic, well-organized, and very friendly. Highly recommend.

Highly meaningful experience. Each student is so happy spending 1-to-1 time with their Reading Mentor -- and they're learning while relating! Also, Lead to Read has an easy access ramp! No nights or weekends and it's the highlight of my busy week. Great mission, great organization!
