Companion Volunteers - Amedisys Hospice of York seeks caring, compassionate individuals who would be willing to spend a few hours a month visiting our terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers spend sacred time together with patients and families simply by accompanying them during their final journey. Companions offer patients healing by practicing a calming presence, deep compassion, and generous listening. Volunteers play an important role in providing social support and decreasing isolation that can so often occur for the terminally ill. Volunteers are provided free training, a training certificate, and can work flexible hours that suit their individual schedules. Volunteer training blends ancient wisdom with contemporary practices. Skills: Interpersonal Skills: Volunteers need to be able to fit into any mode: engage in conversations from the superficial to the spiritually profound, depending on the day. Also need to be comfortable with silence. Requirements: Be able to provide own transportation. Complete volunteer training and orientation. Vigil Volunteers - Amedisys Hospice offers volunteers who are present with a patient in their last moments. As a vigil volunteer, you will provide on-call support to patients and families in the last 24-48 hours of life. Skills: Need to be comfortable with silence. Create a calming and peaceful environment for patients who are actively dying/imminent (i.e. play music, talk with a patient who is not responsive) Provide gentle touch to the hand, back, arms, shoulder or hold hands Interpersonal skills: Be a support system for family and friends near, and post, death of a patient As a vigil volunteer, please remember the following: You must be comfortable with, and able to talk about, death and dying During a vigil, a patient could pass in front of you Amedisys Hospice provides hospice in different settings. A vigil may be held at: a patients home, a skilled nursing facility or assisted living facility Vigils take place in the last hours before death, which may be during the day, night, and sometimes overnight. Requirements: Be able to provide own transportation. Complete volunteer and orientation. Hair Dresser/Barber Volunteers - Amedisys Hospice of York seeks caring, compassionate individuals who would be willing to spend a few hours a month (as needed)shampooing, cutting, trimming, and styling the hair of our terminally ill patients. Hair Dresser /Barber Volunteers spend quality time with our patients and provide special care and attention, allowing our patients to feel better and special. Volunteers play an important role in providing social support and decreasing isolation that can so often occur for the terminally ill. Volunteers are provided free training, a training certificate, and can work flexible hours that suit their individual schedules. Volunteers are trained and supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator. Skills: Interpersonal Skills: Volunteers need to be able to engage in conversations with patients who communicate on different cognitive levels. Some patients may not be able to or choose not to communicate while others will look forward to talking with you about many different topics. Requirements: *Be able to provide own transportation* Complete an application with references, initial training and orientation Complete background check (free) Tuberculosis tests (free) We ask you to make a 1-2 hours a month commitment to our volunteer program, if possible, but you can always do more! *Out of respect for the grieving process, if you are a surviving family member, we encourage you to wait a minimum of 13 months following the patient's death to serve as a direct care volunteer or in public relations activities.

Pet Therapy Program - Amedisys Hospice is looking to provide joy and companionship through pets. Hospice patients and their loved ones are eager to have visitors, especially with a wagging tail, who will provide a caring presence. As a Pet Therapy Volunteer, you will assist in providing one of the many alternative treatment programs used to help with the care of patients experiencing a life limiting illnesses. Therapy pets often connect with a patient in a way a person cannot. If you have a pet, dog, cat, rabbit, miniature pony, etc..., you think would be a great therapy animal, we'd love to have you! Skills: Interpersonal Skills: Volunteers need to be able to fit into any mode: engage in conversations from the superficial to the spiritually profound, depending on the day. Also need to be comfortable with silence. Requirements: Be able to provide own transportation. Veteran-to-Veteran Companion Volunteers - As part of our We Honor Veterans Program, Amedisys Hospice of York seeks caring, compassionate individuals who would be willing to spend an hour a week visiting our terminally ill patients and their families many of them Military Veterans. Volunteers spend sacred time together with patients and families simply by accompanying them during their final journey. Companions offer patients healing by practicing a calming presence, deep compassion, and generous listening. Volunteers play an important role in providing social support and decreasing isolation that can so often occur for the terminally ill. Veterans have the ability to relate to other Veterans due to similar military experiences. That can be comforting to our military veteran patients and their families. Volunteers are provided free training and orientation, a training certificate, and can work flexible hours that suit their individual schedules. Skills: Interpersonal Skills: Volunteers need to be able to fit into any mode: engage in conversations from the superficial to the spiritually profound, depending on the day.
