Mission Statement

It is the mission of Sisters in Shelter to continue to educate the community about human trafficking, advocate for the victims and provide safe housing for adult women who are victims of human trafficking. Our goal is to provide these women with the tools they need to grow from being a victim into a survivor and to once again thrive in our communities.

Description

A long-ago phone call for help evolved into the passionate service now provided by the non-profit agency, Sisters in Shelter.

Staff and volunteers combine to offer individualized care and support to women survivors of human trafficking. These women often have been victims of heinous torture, whose defense mechanisms are destroyed and their self-esteem has been shattered. Through Sisters in Shelter, survivors receive both medical and mental health care. They are given food, shelter, and other necessities in a safe, home-like environment.

Sisters in Shelter goes beyond the safe house. With the help of partnerships and cooperative agreements, the agency also offers training and encouragement to re-acclimate survivors by building social skills, academics, activities of daily living and the basics for independent daily living skill development.

Additionally, Sisters in Shelter provides extensive education and outreach throughout Northwest and North Central Ohio sharing "red flags" that someone may be a victim in need of help, alerting behaviors causing vulnerability, overviews of human trafficking, as well as explaining the many aspects associated with and paralleling human trafficking including trauma, addiction, control, effects of sexual abuse, safety planning, boundaries and finally, the volunteer opportunities available with Sisters in Shelter that participants may make a difference too.
