Mission Statement

AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and interultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership

Description

AFS has been sending teenagers, teachers and young adults abroad for more than 70 years with an exemplary record of safely, security, and service to students, parents, and eductors.

More than 13,000 students go on exchanges every year within the AFS Network, which includes AFS-USA and AFS Partners in more than 90 countries. Support is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a wekk by experienced staff and trained AFS Volunteers who live in the same communities as our students and teachers.

When the American Field Service ambulance drivers returned from volunteering in World War II, they founded AFS as a movement to promote understanding and peace through international student exchange. That mission is as meaningful today as it was back in 1947 when AFS began by exchanging 52 studens from 11 countries formerly at war. Yesterday's ambulance drivers can be compared to today's AFS Exchange Student-ambassadors with the mission of increasing understanding betweeen people, cultures, and countries.

Many of the AFSers who are being sent and those who come to the USA are scholarship students. Opportunities for going as an AFSer may be for a summer, semester, year long or gap year. To learn more about these programs contact www.afs.org/usa and/or call 1-800-AFS-INFO nationally or locally 931-378-7258.

Our family began hosting AFS students when our son was in kindergarten. He is now a junior in high school and we are about to host our sixth student. Our children range in age from elementary through high school and all of them have gained wonderful experiences through being a host family. Our entire family has become involved in the volunteer side of AFS now and forming bonds with the entire group of students is an amazing experience. Watching them grow as a global community of teenagers gives us great hope for our future.

I've had experience with this team through my daughter's involvement with AFS as a student going abroad. They're very efficient, caring and professional people. I plan to apply to be a volunteer for their team in the near future.

I have volunteered with AFS for about 18 years. I really enjoy meeting the students from all over the world. I have learned so much about their countries and cultures. Also, I know they have learned a lot from me and will take an appreciation of the US back to their home countries, families and communities. My family and I also have hosted 9 exchange students and sent 2 of our daughters abroad with AFS. I trust it a lot!!!! thanks, Jenny

I have been volunteering with AFS for over 25 years in every capacity except serving as treasurer of the Miss Tennky Area AFS Volunteer Leadership Team. I have also been an AFS Global Educator to Thailand, and AFS-USA Volunteer Representative to Germany and sponsored an AFS Club at HLHS. I have worked with other foreign exchange programs' students in my high school where I served as a counselor. Great students come with all programs, but the support that AFS gives is outstanding. In fact, on many occasions the AFS volunteers had to assist students from other organizations because there was not an established local support system. Our family has hosted ten (10) AFSers. To my husband and I, AFS is family including the students we have hosted and the other volunteers with whom I have worked locally and throughout the USA. AFS-USA has become the leading foreign exchange organization in the world for 60+ years. AFS is the best. Ask the professionals who work with exchange organization
