Volunteer ESL Tutor (Remote) (1on1 - outside online class)

Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights is a service-based, human rights organization that provides housing, health care, human services, and human rights protections to the most poor and vulnerable people in our society and uses its 118 years of experience to advocate for social justice.
Heartland Human Care Services' (HHCS) Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) Project provides English as a Second Language instruction, emphasizing language fluency and competencies that are relevant to the daily lives of the adult students served. The AVL project is an essential component of HHCS' Refugee and Immigrant Community Services (RICS) department. Classes and tutoring sessions are held online. Volunteers provide one-on-one instruction for adult learners.
RICS is currently seeking a Volunteer ESL Tutor.
Volunteers could tutor our participants once a week depending on volunteers' availability. All volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one day a week throughout the duration of a 3-month quarter.
The volunteer ESL tutors will be supported by the volunteer coordinator via email, Zoom or Google classroom. The volunteer coordinator will provide resources for tutoring sessions if needed. Volunteer ESL Tutors are expected to inform the volunteer coordinator and the tutee if they will not be able to tutor.
Responsibilities:
- Work 1on1 with 1 to 3 tutees during a session
- Provide individual assistance and instruction as needed (Volunteer Coordinator will provide materials but tutors are encouraged to use outside materials and/or create lessons that fit their own teaching style)
- Communicate with the volunteer coordinator to convey his/her tutee’s needs
- Keep accurate attendance and record the progress of the tutee(s) at the close of each session
Qualifications:
- Available 1-2 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months
- Computer proficiency and/or willingness to learn apps like Zoom, Google Classroom, Kami, or other online learning tools
- Must have reliable internet connection
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be flexible, creative, and dependable
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Patience and flexibility
- Interest in working with immigrants in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and multi-ethnic environment
- Some knowledge of ESL tutoring is helpful
- Language proficiency in Russian, Belorussian, Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian and Ukrainian is helpful, but not required

HHCS delivers a variety of services to newly-arrived refugees, asylees and immigrants through its Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS). RICS is comprised of a dedicated, multi-lingual and multi-cultural staff with diverse backgrounds and expertise in the refugee and immigrant fields.
