Hospice patient and family volunteers are vital members of the hospice team. They work closely with Hospice nurses, social workers and hospice care aides to assist in providing much needed support for patients, family members and caregivers. Duties may include providing periods of respite for the family, reading to the patient or simply being there when needed for companionship and comfort. Volunteers may also provide friendship, support and assistance to patients residing at home and in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals and patients who are in their home. Volunteers wishing to provide direct care services to patients and families must complete an Orientation (3hrs) and a Patient / Caregiver Training (5hrs with lunch provided). All volunteers must pass a county criminal background and reference check, along with fingerprinting and a two step TB test. Those who have experienced the death of a loved one must wait at least one year before volunteering with patients and families. Ages 18 and up are welcome to volunteer.
