Small Group Tutoring Session

Empower Through Knowledge. Change Lives Through Learning.

Tutoring at Breakthrough involves working with an assigned student one-on-one to review class material, prepare for tests, and develop effective study habits. We especially need tutors in math, science and history, although expertise in all subject areas is welcome.

Who Can Become a Tutor?

We encourage high school and college students to apply, but also welcome community members familiar with the key subjects needed! Breakthrough students are 7th-12th graders from SJUSD/FMSD schools.

When, Where, and Commitment

Tutoring is not offered on a drop-in basis; instead students and tutors commit to a regular weekly schedule. Volunteers are paired with a student (or more if interested) depending on their availability and the subjects in which they are comfortable tutoring.

Breakthrough Silicon Valley offers virtual tutoring and in-person tutoring at two sites in San Jose:
  • Hoover Middle School (1635 Park Ave, San Jose, CA 95126); or
  • Bridges Academy (1702 McLaughlin Ave, San Jose, CA 95122)

Tutoring is offered Monday through Thursday, Mondays being in-person only at Hoover and Thursdays being both in-person at Bridges and virtually. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are virtual tutoring days only. The first sessions begin at 3:00 pm, and the last at 6:00 pm. The minimum commitment required for tutoring is one hour per week for at least 5 sessions; the full semester is preferred, if possible. The tutoring application will prompt you to indicate your preferred days and time frames. All new tutors are welcome to a one-hour orientation.

Mission Statement

Our dual mission is: to prepare talented and motivated but under-resourced middle school students for success in academically rigorous high school programs that will lead them to college. and to inspire and prepare high school and college students to enter and excel in careers in education.

Description

Breakthrough’s innovative Students Teaching Students model partners middle-school students with college and high school students who serve as teachers, role models and mentors, providing real-life examples that it’s 'cool to be smart’. Breakthrough boasts a proven ripple effect of positive results: 93% of Breakthrough student alumni are accepted to college preparatory programs and 72% of Breakthrough teachers, many of whom were Breakthrough students, go on to pursue professional careers in education.

Students commit to a minimum of two years of tuition-free intensive six-week summer sessions and after-school programs in which they take classes in core academic subjects, and participate in elective courses ranging from astronomy to African-American literature. Breakthrough's classes are rigorous and small (a maximum 4:1 student to teacher ratio) and full participation and attendance is expected of every student.
