ORGANIZATION: Literations

  • 3 people are interested

Literations Incorporated is the Boston host to the national Experience Corps movement. Experience Corps seeks to mobilize the growing older adult population (age 55+) to make a difference in the lives of young people.

Volunteers are needed to read with and mentor students at elementary schools and after-school programs throughout Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, South Boston, the South End, and Framingham.

As Reading Coaches, volunteers read one-on-one with children in the second or third grade who are reading below grade level. They meet two to four times per week for 40-minute sessions during the school year.

Other volunteer positions are also available. Please call (617) 778-0553 or email recruitment@literatons.org for details.

About Literations

Location:

One Federal Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02110, US

Mission Statement

Literations drives educational equity through experienced community volunteers empowering young readers for lifelong learning.

Description

Literations is a nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to improving the reading proficiency of young students in 1st through 4th grade in under-resourced communities using a proven literacy model and trained volunteer coaches.

Nearly 70% of students who live in our communities are not reading at grade level when they enter the fourth grade. Literations is squarely positioned to address the urgent need for individualized support given the growing opportunity gaps for young students.

Our Unique Model

  • Our exclusive focus on students in 1st-4th grade results from the growing body of research that indicates this is the juncture that has the most impact on a child’s lifelong success.
  • Providing more time to practice reading skills with trained volunteer coaches using a structured curriculum provides students with the skills and confidence to succeed.
Thanks to our 1:1 coaching model, Literations students end the school year reading 1.5 grade levels higher than they began.
