Can you see yourself teaming up with an adult to work on their basic reading, writing or conversation skills? Are you interested in meeting new people and making a positive contribution to our community? If so, become a literacy volunteer and help adults become more confident and better able to navigate everyday situations. Volunteers have the option of meeting one-to-one or with small groups. An effective volunteer is respectful, patient and encouraging.
Qualifications:
- Flexible, friendly, patient, optimistic and reliable
- Comfortable reading, writing, and speaking English.
- No previous experience necessary.
After successfully completing training, volunteers are teamed with adults and typically meet once or twice a week for one to two hours each meeting.

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities' information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
