ORGANIZATION: Literations

  • 1 person is interested

As a Literations Incorporated volunteer you will utilize your life experience in literacy programs that inspire students and improve schools. The focus of these programs is improving children's literacy. You will make an impact and a difference! And it's about more than just reading. You will build a strong mentor relationship and both you and the child will grow. You will see verifiable results while also participating in a larger movement, called Experience Corps. Literations Incorporated programs take place during school hours and after school in public elementary schools and Boys & Girls Clubs within the Greater Boston communities of Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, South End, South Boston and Framingham.

Our Reading Coaches program joins trained older adults with children who are reading below grade level in weekly mentoring sessions focused on reading comprehension. In 2007, a rigorous evaluation of the program showed that students in the test group showed greater improvements in reading comprehension than control group students.

About Literations

Location:

One Federal Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02110, US

Mission Statement

Literations drives educational equity through experienced community volunteers empowering young readers for lifelong learning.

Description

Literations is a nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to improving the reading proficiency of young students in 1st through 4th grade in under-resourced communities using a proven literacy model and trained volunteer coaches.

Nearly 70% of students who live in our communities are not reading at grade level when they enter the fourth grade. Literations is squarely positioned to address the urgent need for individualized support given the growing opportunity gaps for young students.

Our Unique Model

  • Our exclusive focus on students in 1st-4th grade results from the growing body of research that indicates this is the juncture that has the most impact on a child’s lifelong success.
  • Providing more time to practice reading skills with trained volunteer coaches using a structured curriculum provides students with the skills and confidence to succeed.
Thanks to our 1:1 coaching model, Literations students end the school year reading 1.5 grade levels higher than they began.
