Emma's Torch is a non-profit social enterprise that trains refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking in the culinary arts and empowers them to build meaningful careers in the culinary industry. As part of its training program Emma’s Torch operates a restaurant and catering business, as well as the cafe at the Brooklyn Public Library. The Emma's Torch Culinary Apprenticeship consists of twelve, 40-hour paid work weeks during which students receive 600 hours of mentorship, training, and work experience. Emma's Torch maintains a 90% placement rate for its job seeking graduates. In order to scale our impact, Emma's Torch is opening a new branch in Inwood right near the new public library. Since we are very new to Manhattan, we are still searching for volunteers to help us with semi-consistent (average of 5 hours per week) English teaching for our students. We don't need experts in those fields, but anyone who has any experience in education, ESOL, and/or working with migrant populations. We also prefer if someone has a flexible schedule for in-person classes during weekdays. Please reach out to Emma Hofman at emmah@emmastorch.org for further information.

Mission Statement
Emma’s Torch is a non-profit social enterprise. Our mission is to train refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking in the culinary arts and to empower them to build meaningful careers in the culinary industry. Our students participate in a full-time, paid, culinary training program in preparation for job placement. Throughout our program, they have the opportunity to learn in both a classroom and apprentice setting, thanks to our restaurant, cafe, and catering social enterprises. Emma’s Torch honors Emma Lazarus, a staunch advocate for refugee rights whose poem, "The New Colossus", adorns the Statue of Liberty.
Description
We are a non-profit social enterprise. We provide refugees with in-depth culinary training as well as employability, equity, and empowerment training. Throughout our program, they learn in both a classroom and apprentice setting, thanks to our cafes and catering businesses. We set them up for successful employment in an industry in which their cultural heritage and cuisine can be celebrated. What’s more, we provide a community in which they can build supportive relationships.
