Mission Statement
The Rohingya Culture Center is a community based social service organization aimed at serving the needs of the Rohingya refugee population in Chicago as well as raising awareness of the persecution of the Rohingya in Burma/Myanmar.
Description
RCC opened its doors in April 2016. Our purpose then and now was to help the Rohingya refugees in Chicago become self-sufficient in the US. RCC now serves one of the largest Rohingya populations in the US. Rohingya from other cities move to Chicago because they know we are an organization they can trust. We currently support 500+ families. Without the help RCC provides Chicago’s Rohingya community, their struggle could well be overwhelming.
Our community is particularly vulnerable. The first Rohingya arrived in Chicago in 2010 and there were no established Rohingya communities to help guide them. The languages they speak are rare: Rohingya which is unwritten, Burmese, and Malay. To complicate this, the stateless Rohingya lost their right to an education when they lost their citizenship in Burma/Myanmar in 1982, leaving most of our community pre-literate.
