Broom Bust

Join us on Mt. Tam for a "day on, not a day off" this MLK Day weekend. We will be celebrating Mr. Luther King Jr.'s legacy of service with a habitat restoration event and a guided nature walk. Spend some time out on the watershed with your friends and family, while preserving Marin’s unique biodiversity!

The Mt. Tam Watershed’s grassy meadows are home to sun-loving plants and animals and are hunting grounds for birds of prey. The fruits of our open canopy hardwoods - oak, bay and madrone trees - nourish abundant forest wildlife. Help us improve the oak woodland and grassland habitat near Bon Tempe Lake by removing invasive French Broom. You’ll be helping to uncover healthy plant communities that support a high diversity of wildlife.

Registration is encouraged, but not required unless you are part of a group of 10 or more. This family-friendly activity is suitable for ages 8 and up, with parental supervision required for volunteers under 16. All first-time volunteers must sign our Volunteer Service Agreement, and all volunteers under 18 must have the form signed by a parent or guardian.

Meeting location is Lake Lagunitas parking lot at 9 a.m. sharp! Parking passes, tools, gloves, snacks and water are provided to volunteers. Please dress for variable weather and bring a water bottle. Call 415-945-1128 after 7 a.m. the morning of the event for updates in case of extreme weather. RSVP here.

Mission Statement

To manage our natural resources in a sustainable manner and to provide our customers with reliable, high-quality water at a reasonable price.

Description

The MMWD volunteer program strives to connect people to nature and their water source by offering hands-on activities on the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed.

Volunteers are currently engaged in habitat restoration, trails maintenance, environmental education, biological monitoring and geographic information systems mapping.

Through their experiences volunteers gain skills, become stewards, contribute to the health and safety of the watershed and have fun while doing so.

MMWD manages 18,500 acres of land in the Mt. Tamalpais Watershed and 2,750 acres adjacent to the Nicasio and Soulajule reservoirs in west Marin. The Mt. Tamalpais Watershed has been identified by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a key component of a biosphere reserve, a designation given to biodiversity hot spots like the Amazon rainforest.
