The reading Service Program's mission is to ensure that printed material for personal, education or professional use is available in accesible formats for people who are visually impaired. A tax Assistant is needed to assist with the coordianteion of the day-today activiied of the program.
Position: Tax Assistance
Job Summary: This short-term position will help with execution of the tax preparation for people with vision impairment as well as the general public. The ideal candidate will be responsible for assisting with virtual tax document submission and managing the online tax preparation site for the duration of the tax preparation season. No Tax Preparation experience is necessary.
Principle duties and responsibilities:
- Assisting clients with both virtual and contactless-in person document submission.
- Meet with clients to assist with completing forms.
- Confirm that client’s information is correct prior to uploading to tax site.
- Conduct in person - online questionnaire with clients.
- Scan client’s personal documents to secured file.
- Explain in detail procedures and follow up actions of the tax preparation to clients.
- Manage cancellations and makes appropriate notifications and schedule modifications.
- Escort visually impaired clients if needed.
- Other administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to handle confidential information.
- Skill managing a project from beginning to end required.
- A strong customer service orientation, good interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel required.
- Proficient with completing online questions, uploading attachments and working through a dashboard.
- The ability to take and follow instruction and apply critical thinking skills, required.
- No Tax Preparation experience necessary.
- Multi/Bi-lingual not necessary but appreciated.
Attire: Business/Business Casual (no jeans or sneakers)
Detail of service opportunity: This volunteer opportunity will take place Monday through Friday, 9:30 am - 4:00 pm on site at the Lighthouse Guild offices located at 250 West 64th Street between Amsterdam and West End Avenues. It is possible that there will be several evenings required for the on-site tax assistance program. The ideal candidate will be available from February 28, 2025, through March 1, 2025, and then available upon request should clients need further assistance. The minimum time requirement is one or two days per week, for five hours minimum. A full day is preferred. We are looking to onboard volunteers the week of Jan 1st to 5th, 2025
