The West End Museum is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join our team as Research Interns. This role offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history of the West End neighborhood in Boston and contribute to preserving its heritage. As a Research Intern, you will play a crucial role in validating historical facts, article writing, and assisting in the development of educational programming.

As a valued member of the WEM team, the Research Intern will assist our Programs Division and Curatorial Departments in sharing the rich tapestry of Boston's history, with a particular focus on industry, immigration, and, more specifically, the stories of The West End neighborhood. This role comes with specific expectations to ensure the quality and accuracy of the content produced.

Note: This is an internship position. Internships are volunteer based, unpaid, and will be recognized in line with the University requirements for the benefit of the student.

This position will require a minimum commitment of 6-12 hours per week from January 13th, 2025 - May 12th, 2025.

Responsibilities:

Research: Conduct in-depth research on various aspects of the West End neighborhood's history, including its people, events, architecture, and cultural significance.

Documentation: Record findings accurately and maintain detailed documentation of research methodologies, sources, and references.

Collaboration: Collaborate with other volunteers, staff, and researchers to share findings, exchange ideas, and contribute to ongoing projects.

Article Writing: Complete writing assignments with accuracy and in a timely manner.

Educational Outreach: Assist in the development and delivery of educational programs, workshops, and tours for museum visitors, schools, and community groups.

Community Engagement: Engage with the local community to collect oral histories, gather personal narratives, and involve residents in the museum's activities and initiatives.

Special Projects: Assist the Curatorial Department as needed in special projects assigned by the Curator.

Expectations:

Passion for History: A genuine interest in history, urban planning, and culture are essential for this role.

Research Skills: Strong research skills, including the ability to navigate archival materials, access online databases, and critically analyze historical sources.

Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in recording and documenting research findings.

Communication: Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with team members and share findings.

Flexibility and Reliability: Willingness to adapt, work independently or as part of a team, and contribute to various museum projects as needed. Dependable and punctual attendance for scheduled volunteer shifts and a commitment to fulfilling assigned responsibilities.

About the West End Museum:

We are a Boston neighborhood museum seeking volunteers interested in the history and culture of the City of Boston, its immigrant era, and urban renewal. The Museum is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of the history and culture of the West End of Boston.

You can expect to find a casual workplace of friendly Volunteers and Staff who are welcoming and eager to engage with the public. A previous knowledge of the neighborhood is not required, but an appreciation of its historical significance is helpful.

We do not have parking available. The Museum is conveniently located across Lomasney way from North Station. Bowdoin Station and Science Park/West End are each about an 8-minute walk.
