Are you a compassionate individual who speaks Ukrainian? We have an exciting volunteer opportunity to connect with a warm and social elderly participant who would greatly appreciate your companionship and support.
Location:
Heritage House at The Market, Seattle, WA 98101
About the Participant:
Our participant was born in Ukraine near one of the country's largest rivers. His father passed away in 1943, just two years after he was born. Raised by his mother, aunts, uncles, and cousins, he has fond memories of a close-knit family, where his cousins were like siblings to him. He had a strong, positive relationship with his mother, and he cherishes the values of family and responsibility.
He graduated from technical college and spent his career traveling throughout Ukraine, building equipment for chemical factories. He raised two children on his own and cared for his mother. In 2001, he moved to the United States to visit his children, who were studying here, and has since made Seattle his home.
Why He Needs a Volunteer:
While he speaks English to some extent, he is much more comfortable communicating in Ukrainian, Russian and having a volunteer who speaks Ukrainian would make a huge difference in his day-to-day interactions. He is a very social person who loves to talk, and having someone to converse with in his native language will allow him to feel more connected and understood.
Key Responsibilities:
* Engage in friendly conversations with the participant in Ukrainian, offering him the chance to share his stories and memories.
* Be a positive, friendly presence in his life, making sure he feels supported and valued.
* Provide companionship and emotional support, particularly with his interests in family, health, and happiness.
Participant Details:
* Social and enjoys conversation, especially in Ukrainian.
* Speaks English intermittently, but Ukrainian is his preferred language.
* Strong values in family, responsibility, and health.
* Currently resides at Heritage House At The Market in Seattle, WA.
* Cherishes family relationships, particularly with his children and grandchildren.
Volunteer Skills and Qualities:
* Fluent in Ukrainian (spoken language preferred).
* Warm, patient, and friendly demeanor.
* Good communication skills and a love for conversation.
* Respectful of the participant’s life story and experiences.
* Compassionate with a desire to support an elderly individual in maintaining strong social connections.
