Come one come all! It’s Kish Fen’s first bonfire workday of the season! After a productive autumn of gathering fen and sedge meadow seeds, and finalizing fire breaks for a prescribed burn, the cold months of brush cutting and burning are upon us. Join this Sunday as we cut and burn invasive brush along the Kishwaukee River headwaters, and enjoy snacks and ecological discussion around the glow of a roaring bonfire. Meet at the end of Palmer Drive in the Village of Lakewood. We’ll start at 9am and conclude around noon. All are welcome to work, learn and make a difference for the future of nature at this beautiful site. RSVP to kishfenfriends@gmail.com if you’re thinking about coming, as it will help with planning. Wear sturdy boots (waterproof if you have them) and bring water and a snack for break time. For more info, visit: www.kishfenfriends.org

Mission Statement

To support the Illinois Nature Preserves System by advocating for and finding increased support, resources, funding, and staff for the system and assisting local volunteer communities as they help restore and care for their Illinois biodiversity reserves.

Description

The Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves support biodiversity conservation in our Nature Preserves state-wide. Our core mission is to ensure that these sites maintain their rare and unique plants, animals, and natural communities into the distant future. To do this, we connect the caring public with treasured nature, help find new resources, and train and empower expert and dedicated volunteer stewards. Nearly 600 ecologically important sites totaling 110,000 acres have been protected as Illinois Nature Preserves and Land and Water Reserves, and we promote the best for them all!
