There are times in our lives when we don’t want to be alone - for many of us, this includes when we are dying.
Enhabit's Vigil Progam allows volunteers to accompany patients so they are not alone in the last day or two of life. A vigil volunteer may help family members to get some rest, enjoy a meal, or take a short break. For those patients who don’t have loved ones by their side, a vigil volunteer can provide the kind of comfort only another human can.
Each vigil volunteer interrupts his or her life to bring comfort to a perfect stranger. Some volunteers drive up to 45 minutes to be with someone in need. Other volunteers choose late-night shifts despite the demands of work and their own families. Volunteers have great flexibility in choosing volunteer assignments and setting their own schedules.
For patients whose family lives across the country and can't be with them, vigil volunteers sit bedside. The volunteers read, pray and can help patients reach their families by phone for their last conversation, bringing them both a sense of peace.
Please reach out to Enhabit today to learn more. Enhabit's volunteer coordinator can help you on your volunteer journey.
