Your time before medical school is golden.

It is a unique time to explore, to see where your passions lie and build a strong foundation of interpersonal skills needed to be the best physician you can be.

Challenge yourself, be honest, and have fun!

Spending time as a hospice volunteer may help you better understand the emotional toll of caring for a dying patient and see firsthand how care providers interact with patients and their families.

Spending time with a caretaker for an ill family member can provide firsthand experience with the types of challenges patients can face when dealing with chronic illness, obtaining medication, the impacts of nutrition on patient health and the difficulties of maintaining the caretaker's personal schedule. Some students have developed empathy as they supported family members in this way and can share this experience on their application or personal statement.

Reach out to the medical schools that you’re interested in to ensure that your planned activity meets their requirements. Admissions officers usually want to show the length and depth of your experience and how this experience motivated you to choose a career in medicine.

No matter how you choose to gain clinical experience, it’s important to remember quality is more important than quantity.

What’s in it for you?

  • Gain direct patient-facing experience.
  • Enhance your interpersonal sensitivity and communication skills
  • Learn more about yourself and the human experience
  • Receive support from a volunteer team and professional members of the hospice team
  • Great experience to put on school applications, scholarships and resumes
