After-School 1 on 1 tutoring with our K-8 students this spring!

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Center of Life

Fusion

Fusion provides homework assistance, tutoring, educational enrichment activities, and a meal for youth in grades K-8. In coordination with Pittsburgh Public Schools, Duquesne University, and other academic and community partners, students are exposed to interactive, developmentally-appropriate activities focused on the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math.

As a 1:1 after-school tutor, you will work closely with students in grades K-8, providing personalized academic assistance and guidance. Your role will be to help students with their homework, reinforce concepts covered in class, and engage them in enrichment activities that foster their love for learning. You will work with individual students, tailoring your approach to suit their unique learning needs, and help build their confidence in various subjects. Volunteering as an after-school tutor is a rewarding experience that allows you to give back to the community and make a lasting impact on young students' lives. You'll have the opportunity to develop your teaching and mentoring skills while witnessing the growth and progress of the students you support.

Program runs Monday through Thursday from 4:30-7 and all tutors will begin the week of January 20. Each shift will last one hour within that time frame. We ask all volunteers to commit to at least 1 hour per week for a full semester to establish healthy relationships with our youth.

Requirements:

  1. A genuine passion for working with children and helping them succeed academically.
  2. Patience, empathy, and excellent communication skills to connect with young learners effectively.
  3. Proficiency in K-8 subjects, particularly in areas like math, English, science, and social studies.
  4. Reliable commitment to the after-school tutoring schedule (at least 1 hour per week for at least one semester).
  5. An understanding of diverse learning styles and the ability to adapt your teaching approach accordingly.
  6. A PA state background check, a DHS child abuse clearance, and a FBI fingerprint clearance.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide families and youth with the life-skills, education, training and resources necessary to be strong and to make their communities strong. We believe this is achieved through building sustainable partnerships locally, nationally, and internationally. At COL we believe "everything is about people."

Description

Center of Life (COL) is a community-empowerment organization located in the Greater Hazelwood Neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Our programs focus on music and arts, athletics, and education.

Founded in 2002 by Tim Smith, COL stands with the people of Hazelwood as they strive to be strong and make their communities strong. With its roots planted deeply in the community and supported by extraordinary partners, COL serves Hazelwood and its surrounding communities with the rich academic out-of-school programs and outstanding experiences in music and arts. COL employs a holistic approach to community through all of its programs, believing that commitment to others is most productive when you walk with those served in their schools, homes and families.

Center of Life hosts multiple youth programs including The KRUNK Movement, Center of Life Jazz, Fusion, and Camp Hazelwood. These programs combine music, art, dance, academics, and athletics rooted in the academic content areas and curricula of the Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards.

Center of Life also hosts community and family engagement to provide families and community members with the knowledge, tools, and strategies they need to move from surviving to thriving.

At Center of Life we believe "everything is about people."
