People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality.

Hospice patients have regrets sometimes, each patient experiences a variety of emotions, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance, we hope.

Patients share thier thoughts with the Hospice team.

I wish I had stayed in touch with my family & friends.

I wish I didn’t work so hard.

I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

I wish that I had let myself be happier.

Hospice patients are those who have been sent home to die. When people realize that their life is almost over and look back on it, it is easy for them to have feelings that many of thier dreams have gone unfulfilled. As a volunteer with Enhabit Hospice you will have the incredibly special opportunity to spend time in the last weeks of their lives.

A Better Way to Care - Connecting with compassion. Patients can count on hospice volunteers to listen and help them achieve thier goals. Sit with patients & help with legacy projects. A legacy project initiative to honor the life of the patient and share their story. Legacy projects can be the simplest things such as storytelling, capturing the patient’s handwriting, or recording their voice. Here are some examples:

  • Life interviews
  • Audio recordings
  • Video interviews
  • Hand casts
  • Meaningful photos
  • Pictures of hands
  • Old hand-written recipes, notes, keepsakes
  • Children’s book and/or stuffed animals with recorded audio
  • Clothing pillows/quilts keepsakes
  • Notes/letters in patient’s own handwriting
  • Shadowbox of keepsakes or meaningful items
  • Signature/handwriting
  • Family recipes
  • Holiday traditions/ornaments
  • Scrapbook or memory book
  • Thumbprint family tree
  • Do-it-yourself Hospice handprint kits

Hospice volunteers help patients find their peace before they pass. Enhabit has a volunteer coordinator that will help you through your volunteer journey to provide you with support & training to guide you to help the patient in the last days of thier lives. Please reach out to Enhabit today!
