What is hospice?

Doctors estimate that patients life expectancy is six months or less

Where is Hospice care provided?

Hospice care is provided in an assisted living, nursing home, hospital or in patients home

When is it time for hospice?

When the patient decides that thier goal is to live more comfortably rather than curing a life-threatening illness

Hospice Team

Hospice care is provided by an interdisciplinary team, the team focuses on the person, not the illness, as they coordinate patient care, clarify the goals of care and foster communication. Volunteer services assists the patient & families with a variety of needs.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteers are the heart of the hospice team, filling roles that range from direct contact with patients to providing clerical tasks. Medicare requires volunteers alongside their paid clinical and administrative staff.

Volunteer Roles

Companionship and human connection Depending on the patient’s and family’s needs, volunteers may help by sitting and talking, reading aloud, taking walks, writing letters, listening to music or therapeutic dog visits.

Respite and support for family members Volunteers may assist with shopping or light household chores or give family caregivers a chance to run errands or practice self-care. Volunteers also may help to care for a family pet.

Bereavement program support Volunteers work closely with the hospice’s bereavement support staff to visit/call the bereaved, assist with mailings & the annual memorial service.

Administrative assistance Volunteers with clerical skills can help with administrative duties in the hospice agency’s office.

Special services Barbers/beauticians offer volunteer their services. Volunteer musicians are welcome to perform. Assist with the We Honor Veterans Program.
