Position Overview

Join SoCal Street Medicine in providing compassionate healthcare services and resources to individuals experiencing homelessness. As a Community Health Volunteer, you will work alongside medical professionals and fellow volunteers to deliver essential health services directly to unsheltered communities throughout San Diego.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist medical teams during street outreach visits to homeless encampments, providing basic health screenings and support services
  • Help with patient intake, documentation, and maintaining confidential health records
  • Distribute hygiene supplies, and other essential items to community members
  • Support wound care
  • Help maintain inventory of medical supplies and outreach materials
  • Participate in team debriefings and contribute to improving service delivery
Qualifications

Required:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Reliable transportation to reach outreach locations
  • Ability to walk for extended periods and carry supply bags
  • Strong interpersonal skills and compassionate demeanor
  • Commitment to treating all individuals with dignity and respect
  • Basic computer literacy for documentation purposes
  • Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and environments

Preferred:

  • Experience in healthcare, social work, or related fields
  • Bilingual skills (especially Spanish)
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Knowledge of local community resources and social services
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations
  • Background in public health or community outreach
Time Commitment
  • Minimum 4 hours per month
  • 6-month minimum commitment

  • Harm reduction principles

Our team consists of licensed physicians, nurses, and trained volunteers, all committed to bringing quality healthcare directly to those who need it most.

- Individuals with substance use disorders
