To provide visitors with information that will enrich their visit to the State Capitol and to
Mississippi. Under the purview of Mississippi State Capitol Visitor Services, the tour
guide/hospitality attendant will provide information that shall educate the public about the
historical and architectural aspects of the building, Mississippi’s legislative process, as well as
tourism-related information that will make the visitor experience to Mississippi more enjoyable.

Mission Statement

Visitor Services at the Mississippi State Capitol provides, with a high degree of decorum, the needed assistance and presentation of accurate information to Capitol visitors, staff, and legislators. The Capitol volunteers are an integral part of the Visitor Services team as they enrich the walk-in visitor experience by serving as ambassadors for the Capitol and the state of Mississippi.

Description

Designated a Mississippi Landmark in 1986 and a National Historic Landmark in 2016, the Mississippi State Capitol has been the seat of the state’s government since 1903. Tours detail its history, Beaux Arts-style architecture, and provide an up-close look inside the chambers of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Visitor Services with volunteers as part of its team welcome people from all around our state, country, and world. By joining our team as volunteer tour guides, our volunteers make a difference and are pivotal in enriching the tour experience of our guests through wonderful, unique and informative interactions.

The goal of the Mississippi State Capitol volunteer program is for volunteers to be ambassadors for the state. Volunteers are our visitors’ first point of contact and are encouraged to build a rapport with guests. Duties include greeting and welcoming visitors, providing them an overview of the building, sharing information about the Capitol and other sites in Mississippi, and conducting guided tours at advertised times - all to ensure a successful visit.

Volunteers make our walk-in guest’s visit to the Capitol more than just a visit; the volunteers make it a meaningful experience.
