Tampa Bay Watch is recruiting volunteers to create a living shoreline at Fantasy Island. The project meeting location is Williams Park boat ramp, 9425 US Hwy 41, Riverview, FL.
The project will involve the installation of oyster shell bars and oyster reef balls. The goal is restoring lost habitat systems to the bay, prevent further erosion of the shoreline and improve water quality through natural biological filtration.
The shell bag installation involves shoveling fossilized shell into mesh bags and transporting them via boats to be installed on the shoreline of Fantasy Island to create a series of oyster bars. Volunteers are encouraged to work in pairs to take turns shoveling and tying the mesh bags. In addition to shoveling, volunteers are needed to wade in the water on the shoreline to pass the bags for the installation. Lighter duty activities involve cutting the plastic mesh into bags, stretching the mesh, and tying the bags. Reef ball installation is a heavy project as reef balls weigh 200 pounds each. Two people share the weight of each reef ball at a time to install it on the shoreline.

Description
Founded in 1993, we perform a variety of habitat restoration and protection activities throughout the year utilizing thousands of volunteers to help the bay recover from its environmental threats. The efforts of Tampa Bay Watch to restore and protect the bay's habitat through stewardship provide effective long-term improvements to the bay and empower our community to counteract local environmental problems. Learning how to achieve and maintain a healthy environment is a legacy that will influence our children and future generations for years to come.
