Please visit the new page to apply.
Join us in assisting with the efficient operation of our donation center! Help sort and hang clothing, assemble kits, and assist during pick-up times. Work alongside other dedicated volunteers to ensure that donations are organized and ready for distribution to those in need.
Why: Your efforts will help provide essential items to individuals and families in need, ensuring they receive clean, properly fitting clothing and necessary supplies. With your help, we can swiftly sort and distribute donations to our community.
Who: L.A. Family Housing (LAFH) works to help families transition out of homelessness and poverty through a continuum of housing enriched with supportive services. Founded in 1983, LAFH served more than 2,500 people living in poverty this past year through its multiple housing and supportive service programs, and has served over 100,000 people since its inception. In total LAFH owns and operates 21 properties, including three homeless shelters and 18 permanent rental properties.
What to Expect: During your volunteer shift, you could be working on these different tasks:
Sorting and Hanging Clothing:
Examine donated clothing for any damage or stains and place undesired items in the designated bin.
Sort clothing by category (e.g., men, women, children) and season (e.g., summer, winter).
Hang clothing neatly on designated racks, ensuring hangers face the same direction for easy browsing.
Creating Kits:
Assemble kits based on specific needs (e.g., hygiene kits, welcome home baskets, baby kits, school supplies, summer care packages, etc.).
Check the inventory list for required items in each kit.
Package items neatly and label each kit clearly.
Restock inventory shelves with newly assembled kits.
Assistance During Pick-Up Times:
Guide staff during pick-up hours to locate and distribute clothing efficiently. Ensure hangers are returned after removing clothes.
Answer any queries from staff regarding clothing sizes, types, and availability.
Keep the pick-up area organized and ensure all clothing returns to the correct place after handling.
Pulling Orders:
Retrieve pre-ordered items from the donation room.
Check the accuracy of orders and adjust as necessary.
Assist in packaging orders for easy pick-up.
What's Required:
Must be comfortable standing and lifting up to 25 lbs
Must be over age 14
Any volunteers under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult who also signs up and participates. One adult may supervise up to 2 minors.
