Job Description:
A pulmonologist is a medical doctor specializing in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the respiratory system, including the lungs, airways, and related structures. Pulmonologists manage conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and lung cancer, as well as sleep-related breathing disorders.
Start date: January 6, 2025
Time commitment: 2 to 6 hours per week for the volunteer teaching assistant
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and treat respiratory conditions using advanced diagnostic tools such as pulmonary function tests, imaging studies, and bronchoscopy.
- Develop and implement treatment plans, including medications, therapies, and lifestyle recommendations.
- Participate in clinical research or teaching (if working in an academic setting).
- Manage acute and chronic respiratory illnesses in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Collaborate with other specialists, such as thoracic surgeons or allergists, for comprehensive patient care.
- Educate patients and their families about respiratory health and disease prevention.
- Stay updated on advancements in pulmonary medicine to provide evidence-based care.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Completion of an internal medicine residency program (3 years).
- Completion of a pulmonology fellowship program (2-3 years).
- Active medical license in the practicing jurisdiction.
- Board certification in pulmonology (optional but preferred).
- Certification in critical care medicine or sleep medicine (if subspecializing).
- Clinical experience during residency and fellowship training.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and managing a wide range of respiratory disorders.
- Expertise in performing and interpreting specialized diagnostic tests such as spirometry, CT scans, and bronchoscopy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to develop effective treatment plans.
