Agate Housing and Services helps people experiencing homelessness, and its mission is to end homelessness and relieve hunger. Some of the people we serve are unsheltered and sleeping outside. We equip them with sleeping mats, bedrolls, and other survival supplies, but these are often limited and costly. Luckily, there is an environmentally friendly way to support these individuals: making plarn bedrolls! Plarn is plastic yarn, which can be crotheted into many things, such as bedrolls.
We are looking for people interested in learning how to make plarn and crochet it into bedrolls on Wednesday mornings. The first session is in January 2025 at 9:30AM, but the exact date is TBD. They would be joined by other volunteers to learn and make a team effort in creating bedrolls, which would help keep our community members off the ground and stay dry. Agate will provide the plastic bags needed for making plarn.
Responsibilities:
-Use plastic bags to make long strands of plarn
-Make bedrolls out of plarn
-Teach others how to make plarn and plarn bedrolls
Requirements and Commitment:
-Able to contribute 1- 2 hours per week on Wednesdays at 9:30AM -After attending the tutorial session in January 2025, anyone interested in coming back on a regular basis will be interviewed, screened, and oriented as an official voluntee rSupervision:
The Plarn Crocheter would be supervised by the Volunteer Manager, Noah Chan. They will be given a full orientation and onboarding, a tour, and be the on-site contact for day-to-day questions, support, and concerns.

Impact:
The people we serve are unstably housed, and sometimes, they are not able to stay in a shelter. When sleeping outside, the ground can be hard, cold, and wet, which is unsafe and uncomfortable. A bedroll made of crocheted plastic bags is an environmentally friendly way to support these individuals. It provides cushioning against the ground and can keep them dry throughout the night. Plastic bags are not biodegradable, and many Minnesotans have more than they need. This is also a way to keep these plastic bags out of the landfill andreuse them for good.
