Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County

Attend an info session to about becoming a "Big" in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Mentorship has a positive impact on youth and the community as a whole. Mentored youth are less likely to consume drugs and alcohol, skip school, or engage in violent behavior. Mentorship builds safer communities and uplifts future generations. San Diego youth enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters show decreased depressive symptoms and increased self-esteem, social skills, and academic performance.

Big Brothers Big Sisters focuses on one-to-one mentoring, meaning volunteers ('Bigs') will be paired with one child ('Littles'). A Big and a Little are called a "match" once they've been paired. The time commitment for a Big is to meet with their Little 2 times a month for two hours each time, a total of 4 hours per month for a minimum of 1 year. However, the average match length is 32 months, so many Bigs continue to stay matched with their Little after the initial requirement.

Volunteers are expected to schedule outings with the child that can include a variety of activities that both the Big and Little enjoy. Big Brothers Big Sisters hosts events and activities for matches throughout the year and provide opportunities to win free tickets to various events. Matches are also assigned a Match Support Specialist that provides ongoing support and resources to ensure that the match is successful.
