The National MPS Society is seeking volunteers to assist with our MPS Jingle Bell Run on Friday, December 20 2024. This 5K Run and 1-Mile Family Walk will be held at Bill Frederick Park (Pavilion 6), with same-day registration for the race beginning at 7:00 AM. At the conclusion of the race, there will be a Family Picnic. All funds raised from the MPS Jingle Bell Run will go towards research for MPS and ML, genetic lysosomal storage disorders that are diagnosed at birth and often lead to a shortened life span.

We will need help setting up the event, placing signs, running the picnic lunch, and more. Thank you very much for your support of the Society! If you have any questions about this event, please email Bethany at bethany@mpssociety.org.

Mission Statement

The National MPS Society exists to find cures, support and advocate for MPS and ML.

Description

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) and related diseases are genetic lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) caused by the body's inability to produce specific enzymes. Normal ly, the body uses enzymes to break down and recycle materials in cells. In individuals with MPS and related diseases, the missing or insufficient enzyme prevents the proper recycling process, resulting in the storage of materials in virtually every cell of the body. As a result, cells do not perform properly and may cause progressive damage throughout the body, including the heart, bones, joints, respiratory system and central nervous system. While the disease may not be apparent at birth, signs and symptoms develop with age as more cells become damaged by the accumulation of cell materials.
