We are seeking a passionate and motivated Volunteer Publicist to support our mission by increasing public awareness and visibility of PIK2AR’s programs, events, and initiatives. The ideal candidate is experienced in public relations, communications, or media, with a deep understanding or appreciation of Pacific Islander cultures and a commitment to advocating for community-focused causes. As our Publicist, you’ll play a key role in helping PIK2AR reach a broader audience, engage with supporters, and amplify the voices and stories within our Pacific Islander community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement PR strategies to promote PIK2AR’s events, programs, and initiatives across various media channels.
  • Draft press releases, pitches, and media advisories to generate coverage in local, regional, and national media outlets.
  • Build and maintain relationships with media contacts, journalists, and influencers interested in Pacific Islander, diversity, and community-focused stories.
  • Coordinate media outreach and respond to press inquiries, serving as a liaison between the organization and media representatives.
  • Support social media and digital content teams by providing PR guidance on campaign strategies and content opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the PIK2AR team to highlight compelling stories and testimonials from our community members and program participants.
  • Assist in the development of key messages and talking points for spokespersons, ensuring consistency with PIK2AR’s mission, values, and goals.
  • Help organize press conferences, media appearances, and special events to generate awareness and foster community engagement.

Qualifications:

Degree is not mandatory

  • Background in public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field (professional experience or education)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to craft engaging stories and pitches.
  • Familiarity with media relations, particularly within Utah or among media outlets focused on community, culture, or nonprofit stories.
  • Passion for Pacific Islander communities and advocacy, with cultural sensitivity and understanding of Pacific Islander values.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
  • Availability to attend occasional in-person events and meetings, especially around key program milestones and events.

Description

We are a non profit servicing the Pacific Island community and all underserved community members, using our culture traditions and practices to eliminate violence, improve economic impact, preserve and promote ALL Pacific Island Cultures.

Our Pacific Island Male violence prevention advocacy group, KAVA (Kommitment Against Violence Altogether) Talks educates and creates awareness of Violence Prevention & Healing Resources available. The Mens Monthly Meetup is the 2nd Thursday of each month.

We offer a weekly Pacific Island Womens Empowerment Group in Salt Lake City and in St George, Utah once a month. A Womens Empowerment Group for all Women once a month in Salt Lake City.

We work with Pacific Island entrepreneurs, start ups, and business providing resources at the monthly meetup, 1st Thursday of each month, of the SLC Pacific Island Business Alliance. Our goal is to have a Pacific Island Business Hub as a business incubator to ensure success and currently have Mentors available to walk through with each participant.

To preserve and promote ALL Pacific Island Cultures, the Utah Pacific Island Film Series provides a FREE Pacific Island film each month at a different location. Govenor Herbert declares August as Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month. PIK2AR Kicks off the month at the end of July with 5 events creating platforms for Paciifc Island Business, Pacific Island Community Organizations, Mainstream Service Providers to engage, educate and collobrate.
