Overview

Friendly Mart is a community market dedicated to providing groceries at no cost to those in need. Operating in partnership with Second Harvest, the Friendly Mart offers a diverse selection of food items, including fresh produce, canned and dried goods, and occasionally dairy products like milk and eggs, as well as various protein sources.

Clients can schedule appointments to shop at Friendly Mart, where they have the opportunity to choose the items that best meet their individual needs. Our goal is to support the community by ensuring access to essential groceries while maintaining a respectful and dignified shopping experience.

Schedule

· Monday:

o Shift: 9:00 AM - 12:00PM

· Tuesdays:

o 1st Shift: 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM

o 2nd Shift: 12:30 PM - 3:00 PM

· Wednesdays:

o 1st Shift: 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM

o 2nd Shift: 4:30 PM - 7:00 PM

About the role

As a volunteer, you'll be essential to the successful operation of Friendly Mart. Under the guidance of the Program Assistant or Volunteer Specialist, you'll be assigned tasks to support the Friendly Center team in running the Mart efficiently and effectively. Your contributions will help ensure the smooth functioning of our community market and the satisfaction of those we serve.

Key Tasks

Mondays

· Stocking Associate: Volunteers can help with receiving, organizing, and stocking food items on shelves. This ensures the pantry is well-maintained and items are easily accessible.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays

· Check-in: Volunteers will greet and check-in clients by confirming appointment time and scanning the client’s QR code provided during registration.

· Store Navigators: Volunteers will guide clients through the Friendly Mart with dignity and respect, ensuring they feel comfortable and without shame or embarrassment. They will assist clients in navigating the stations, helping them locate the items they need and answering any questions. It’s important to remember that all items are optional; never shame clients for not selecting or needing certain items

· Restocking and Bagging: Volunteers will restock items as needed and assist with bagging items at the checkout station, ensuring clients can easily carry their selections.

What we are looking for

No formal experience is required. Ideally, we are seeking:

· Enthusiastic individuals with great attitudes

· Ability to take direction

· Comfortable engaging with clients

· Team players

· Reliable individuals

· Ability to stand for an extended period of time

· Capacity to lift up to 25 lbs.

· You must be at least 14 years old or older.

(Any participant who is under 18 must have parental permission)

Dress Code

· Comfortable layered clothing to protect you from weather conditions

· Close toed shoes

Description

WHO WE ARE:
Friendly Center has been helping less-fortunate children and their families move toward self-sufficiency for 95 years. This is done through over 20 programs and services. We provide life-changing assistance to more than 1,000 families each year.

WHAT WE DO:
We help the entire family with programs in education, food support, and mental health services. Our goal is to meet the needs a family may face, get them back on their feet, and prevent the cycle from continuing to the next generation.
