English as a New Language (ENL) Tutors teach English completely remotely to newly arrived refugees and humanitarian migrants in New York. Volunteers are paired with students individually or in small groups (up to six people), grouped by their English proficiency level, which can range from none to basic or beginner. Through weekly two-hour sessions, ENL Tutors help refugees build essential communication skills for interacting with neighbors, employers, and service providers. This program is vital for Commonpoint clients' long-term success. ENL Tutors can create their own engaging lesson plans or use provided materials to promote learning and cultural exchange.
Format: Volunteers meet virtually with students one-on-one or in groups of up to 6 students.
Time Commitment: Two hours per week for three months, with the possibility of extending the commitment up to six months if both the volunteer and the students wish to continue.
Role Requirements: ENL Tutors must have experience teaching English to non-native speakers and/or be certified to do so.
